After Gettysburg Mac fought a different kind of
battle. Prior to the Civil War, Mac had completed his
studies of the law and been admitted to the Bar in
Pennsylvania. In October 1863, he was assigned to the
Capitol on General Court Marshal. In September 1864
Colonel James M. Thomson was married to Miss Mary
Rebecca Slye at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in
Washington, D.C. Mac remained in D.C. attached to the
military court and under medical care for recurring
bouts of malarial fever until March 31, 1865 when he
rejoined his unit. He was mustered out with his
Company on July 13, 1865, brevetted Colonel,
brevetted Brigadier General.
