During my high school years I frequently visited with
my paternal grandmother, Lillian Glass Thomson, who lived
in the Greystone, just a few blocks from my mid-city school.
She was a live-in housekeeper. She had a small room at the
back of the apartment next to the kitchen opposite the room
of the live-in nurse. How Grandma arrived in Mr.
Sturdevant’s service I never knew. She thought it a nice
arrangement. The work was light; she had shelter and a small
income.
