As one of Maryland's earliest doctors, Thomas
Gerard's medical skills were is great demand as
evidenced in many of St. Mary's County Colonial
Administrative Accounts. Very ill patients were carried
to the Doctor's house.
A 1639 inventory of the estate of Richard Lee
of Virginia granted Mr. Gerard 230 pounds of
tobacco and 6 pounds 17 sterling for physick.
These patients, however, could not speak well
of the doctor's medical skill for both Richard
Lee and his wife died in Dr. Gerard's home.
