Shortly after the wedding Roy was drafted. He was
deployed to Korea for one year.
Roy and I had moved into an apartment in a building
owned by his father. While Roy was in Korea I
continued to work at Anheuser-Busch, went bowling
and fixed up the apartment. Roy came home to a
decorated apartment and a collie named Lady.
I made sure Lady was prepared for Roy to come
home. I left Roy’s shoes under the bed and his
clothes hanging in the closet so Lady would know his
scent. Lady attached herself to Roy the day he
returned from Korea.
Day followed day and Kathy followed Roy,
junior.
Every week-end we would go out to the Shady Rest
on the Big River at Byrnes Mill. The cabin belonged
to Roy’s parents. Early in the morning we set out
trout lines. We would dig a pit and roast a
hindquarter of cow. We would hang a huge iron pot
over a fire where a Mulligan stew would simmer for
hours. There was a shallow pool safe for swimming
and a gravel bar with just enough water flow for
bathing.
